2006 World Series Champions: St. Louis Cardinals
The most unbelievable part of this scene is that we aren't going back to Detroit. If you had told me when we flew to St. Louis last Monday that the 2006 World Series doesn't return to Comerica, you would have been laughed at. Neither team was that much better or that much worse than the other, neither team was that dominant to just end it with three straight wins. But the St. Louis Cardinals just did. They got sensational starts from Chris Carpenter and Jeff Weaver, they were solid, and they had plenty of help from the Tigers' defense. Here is a video I took with my Canon Powershot A540 from my vantage point outside the Mark McGwire Room behind the right-field foul pole -- roughly the same vantage point as exactly two years earlier to the moment at old Busch...
I ran into Marty Hendin, the Cardinals' longtime head of marketing, on the elevator after leaving the Cardinals' clubhouse celebration scene. I told him that the fireworks show probably was going to be one of the cherished memories for Cards fans, and he said, "We do that once every 24 years." Here is what that looked like, and the strong wind was playing havoc with the fireworks...
